My story behind the advice is:
In managing my sales force, I wanted to make sure that a catastrophe (i.e. loss of a large customer) would not cripple our company. I developed two sales forces: one for mom & pop size stores and a separate sales force for the large retailers. We offered a high fashion line (something special) for the mom & pop stores and a “cover the masses” line for the large retailers. Our sales force for the mom & pop stores earned a higher sales commission to compensate for the smaller gross sales per store.
